FAWNL Week Seven Round Up Part Two

After the midweek round of league games on Wednesday and Thursday this week it was back to cup action for the FAWNL clubs  this afternoon as the FAWNL Cup / Plate's got underway with the first round's proper.

As expected, sadly, no Anna Soulsby in the Durham Cestria line up today. There has been no update on Cestria's social media regarding Anna's condition since she went off with an injury on Thursday but hopefully no news is good news and it won't be long until Soulsby is back on the team sheet.

Tier 4's Cestria travelled to Willenhall is the West Midlands to take on Sporting Khalsa, currently bottom of the Northern Premier Division with 6 losses from 6 and goal difference of -25, in the first round of the FAWNL Plate. A first half stoppage time goal from Daisy Clarke, her second of the season, sent Cestria in to the half time with.a 0-1 lead. The score stayed the same for the entirety of the second half until a 96th minute Erin Nicholson goal, also her second of the season, secured Cestria's place in the hat for the second round draw.

Laura Wareham returned in goal for Division One North (tier 4) league leaders Middlesbrough as they hosted Leeds United, currently 4th in tier 4, in the first round of the FAWNL Cup. Third consecutive match for Kiera Skelton in the starting line up and 4th consecutive start for Sharna Wilkinson alongside Boro regulars Ellen Packham, Ellen Turnbull, Lauren Robson, Leanna Giles and Millie Bell.

After Leeds had the better of the opening 10 minutes, Middlesbrough started to get a foothold in the game and create chances of their own, Ellen Turnbull heading wide from a corner on 14 minutes and Armani Maxwell forcing a save from the Leeds keeper with a free kick in the 17th minute.

Millie Bell opened the scoring on 20 minutes with a rocket of a shot from 25 yards out, her 3rd goal in the competition this season, flying into the top right corner.

Early chance for Boro to extend their lead in the second half, Ellen Turnbull seeing her 47th minute shot on goal blocked then Turnbull and Giles combining two minutes later but unable to create a chance. Sharna Wilkinson, who would've had her first Boro goal on Wednesday had the match not been abandoned hit a 59th minute free kick safely into the gloves of the Leeds United keeper.

Penalty for Boro in the 83rd minute, Turnbull tripped after racing into the box. Lauren Robson saw her penalty saved and Turnbull's follow up hit the side netting. This was corrected moments later, Boro intercepting a Leeds goal kick and getting the ball out to Turnbull who lobbed the keeper for her 4th of the season, sending Boro into the second round of the cup.

Impressive start to the season for Middlesbrough, unbeaten in the league with 4 wins and 1 draw plus wins in the determining round, preliminary round and now first round of the cup.

Bridget Galloway returned to the Nottingham Forest starting 11 today as the Northern Premier Division league leaders travelled to the Northwest to take on Cheadle Town Stingers, currently second in Division One North, also in round one of the league cup.

Bridget was almost on the scoresheet after 6 minutes but her goal was ruled out for offside. Close again after half an hour, dragging a close range shot narrowly wide.

All Forest's subs had been used by the 78th minute however it took 78th minute sub Sophie Domingo just 4 minutes to finally break the deadlock, scoring her 5th of the season to see Forest safely into the bag for round two. No confirmation as of yet for what date the draws for round 2 will take place.

Daisy Burt's Derby County came up against NUW's old friends Hashtag United. Hashtag began the defence of their title with a 0-3 away win, however it was nice to see Daisy get a full 90 mins in. A 0-5 win away at Barnsley saw Stoke City comfortably progress to the second round of the cup, no Erin Nelson in today's Stoke City squad though. And finally, no goal for Bianca Owens this afternoon as Norton & Stockton Ancients deart the FAWNL Plate following a 4-1 AET loss away to Loughborough Lightning.

Everyone returns to league action next weekend, including a top of the table clash as 3rd place Chorley host Boro.
