FAWNL Week Six Round Up

It barely seems 5 minutes since opening weekend of the FAWNL season and yet we have reached the quarter season mark already, time really is flying. A little on the quiet side compared to the last few weekends in terms of contributions from former NUW players but still some significant happenings across Division One North and the Northern Premier Division.

No Bridget Galloway in the Nottingham Forest squad this week but a 0-4 win away to Hull City sees Forest retain their place at the top of their league, extending their goal difference to a formidable +28 after 6 matches. League newcomers Rugby Borough maintain the pressure on the leaders, a 4-0 win at home to Derby County, which saw Daisy Burt return to the Derby starting 11, keeps Rugby in second place, still one point behind Forest and with an equally impressive +24 goal difference.

A 2-2 away draw for Wolverhampton Wanderers against a Stoke City side that did not feature Erin Nelson saw Wolves drop from 3rd in the table to 5th whilst a 1-0 home win against West Brom saw Burnley restore order to the league, returning from 4th to 3rd, ahead of Liverpool Feds and Wolves on goal difference.

In Division One North, for the first time in a league match this season Anna Soulsby was not on the scoresheet for Durham Cestria. A 4-2 loss away to Leeds United means Cestria drop from 4th to 6th in the league however only one goal separates 4th to 7th.

Despite not scoring, Anna remains top scorer in the league although Cheadle Town Stingers' Jessica Gillin has closed the gap to one goal. As it stands:
Anna Soulsby (Durham Cestria) 6
Jessica Gillin (Cheadle Town Stingers) 5
Jasmine Saxton (Doncaster Rovers Belles) & Kathryn Smith (Leeds United) 4
Katie Astle (York), Lucy Farrow (Doncaster), Harriett Houghton & Imogen Porteous-Williams (Cheadle), Bianca Owens (Norton) Amy Woodruff (Leeds) and Ellen Turnbull (Boro) all with 3 goals.

I understand Anna took a knock during the match and finished the 90 mins with a swollen ankle. Fingers crossed it's nothing serious and won't result in any matches being missed, I'm really pleased for Anna and how well she is doing this season, I'd love to see Soulsby once again printed across the black & white stripes of an NUW shirt.

Impressive Middlesbrough extended their unbeaten start to the season, a 2-0 win against Huddersfield Town means they stay top of Division One North.

Keira Skelton and Sharna Wilkinson both started for Boro alongside Ellen Packham, Ellen Turnbull, Lauren Robson, Leanna Giles and Millie Bell with goal keeper Laura Wareham amongst the subs.

Cumbrian midfielder Leanna Giles, who starter her senior career with Newcastle United Women, opened the scoring after 72 minutes. A Lauren Robson ball into the box led to a scramble in the penalty area with Giles finding the net for her second league goal this season. The second goal followed very shortly after, a curling shot from Armani Maxwell on 75 minutes.

Finally, the York vs Barnsley match had to be abandoned due to a medical incident requiring an ambulance. Fortunately the Barnsley player involved has been checked by paramedics, discharged from hospital and is heading home to recover.

Boro host York City on Wednesday evening then Cestria face Norton & Stockton Ancients away on Thursday.
